orn in 1951 in Lugano (Switzerland). He graduated from the school for arts and crafts in 1970. Meuwly begins to play the guitar at the age of 14. He joins some rock groups and appears with them in concerts in various places in Europe and Asia and for radio broadcasts. In 1974 he enters the Swiss Jazz School in Bern, and in 1979 he obtains his diploma for guitar, composition and arrangements for combo and big band. Then he starts a career as a soloist, arranger and conductor with appearances in studios, clubs, theatres and other music scenes in Switzerland, Italy and France, where he meets musicians of international reputation. In 1988, Giorgio Gaslini honours him twice for his activities. In 1993, Meuwly goes through a special training of private guitar lessons with John Abercrombie in New York. Meuwly's actual music is deeply rooted in be-bop, but his insatiability quite often and willingly triggers an impulse that makes him visit completely different musical fields from blues to fusion, passing also New Orleans jazz and rock n' roll. Apart from his public performances, Meuwly has ever since worked as a guitar teacher. This didactical activity culminated in 1993, in co-operation with two other musicians (Guido Parini and Duca Marrer), in the foundation of the Scuola di musica moderna (smum) [school of modern music] in Lugano, where he is teaching now the guitar, arrangement and improvisation. Concerts: At present, Meuwly plays in a sextet with five other teachers of the smum: Emilio Soana (tp), Gabriele Comeglio (ts), Mario Rusca (p), Riccardo Vigorè (cb) and Guido Parini (dr). The six musicians have also been the soloists in the concert given in Duke Ellington's honour by the Orchestra della Svizzera Italiana [orchestra of the Italian speaking Switzerland] at the Estival Jazz 1999 in Lugano. Meuwly had already participated at this big event of Lugano in 1998, together with Ralph Towner, and three more times before in the 1980ies. In 1993 he performed with his trio at the Willisau festival. Furthermore, he had been performing at other events and music scenes like the Ticino Jazz, The Swiss Finnish Workshop, Tempo di jazz in Ferrara (Italy), Mister Jazz '90 in Ravenna (Italy), and several times with his band at the Blues to Bop festival in Lugano, at the Capolinea in Milan and in many more places in Switzerland and elsewhere in Europe. On these occasions he played side by side with the most renowned musicians such as Cuppini, Tommelleri, Ratti, Rigon Faraò, Ambrosetti, Hämmerli, Scherrer, Eckinger, Zoller, Lee Konitz, Bobby Watson, Clifford Joradan, Phil Woods and many more. Recordings and compact discs: Various recording sessions with Meuwly and his orchestra of light music, his bands, with the pianist Leandro Aconcha and others at the studios of the Radio of the Italian speaking Switzerland RSI. In 1988 he joined in the recording sessions for the record "Generazioni", published by RSI. Three CD: "Pieces of life" released in 1992, in which Meuwly plays some melodies that are of special significance to him, and at the same time he demonstrates his talents as a composer (this project was sponsored by the Department for Cultural Affairs of the Canton Ticino); the CD "Portrait in music" (ed. SMM, distributed by Altri Suoni) was realised in 1994 in Lugano, together with Lee Konitz and other musicians in occasion of the presentation of the smum [School of modern music]; and finally "Blues to bop Lugano 3.-6.9.98" (ed. Altri Suoni), a compilation of the festival highlights, where we find Meuwly and his group with the opening piece "Mercy, mercy, mercy". With great passion Meuwly also exerts himself for the organisation of concerts and public music evenings.


Giorgio Meuwly wurde 1951 in Lugano (Schweiz) geboren. Daselbst absolvierte er die Kunstgewerbeschule und schloss 1970 mit dem Diplom ab. Im Alter von 14 Jahren beginnt er Gitarre zu spielen. Er spielt in einigen Rockgruppen, mit denen er Konzerte an verschiedenen Orten in Europa und Asien und bei Radio- und Fernsehsendungen gibt. 1974 schreibt er sich an der Swiss Jazz School in Bern ein und erlangt 1979 das Diplom für Gitarre, Komposition und Bearbeitung für Combo und Big Band. Damit beginnt seine Karriere als Solist, Arrangeur und Dirigent, welche ihn zu Auftritten mit international bekannten Musikern, in Aufnahmestudios, Clubs und an Theaterbühnen in der Schweiz, in Italien und in Frankreich führt.. 1988 darf er von Giorgio Gaslini zwei Anerkennungsprämien für seine Tätigkeiten entgegennehmen. Zu seiner Ausbildung zählen auch die privaten Spezialisierungskurse, welche er 1993 in New York beim Gitarristen John Abercrombie absolviert. Seine aktuelle Musik ist tief im Be-bop verwurzelt, doch seine Unersättlichkeit gibt ihm oft die erwünschten Anstösse, sich auch in ganz anderen Musikbereichen, ausgehend vom Blues über den New Orleans Jazz und den Rock'n roll bis hin zur Fusion, umzusehen. Neben seiner Konzertätigkeit hat sich Meuwly auch immer dem Musikunterricht als Gitarrenlehrer gewidmet, was 1993, in Zusammenarbeit mit den beiden Musikern Guido Parini und Duca Marrer in der Gründung der Scuola di musica moderna (smum / Schule moderner Musik) in Lugano gipfelte. Dort unterrichtet Meuwly nun Gitarre, Bearbeitung und Improvisation. Konzerte: Zur Zeit spielt Meuwly in einem Sextett zusammen mit weiteren Lehrern der "smum", nämlich Emilio Soana (tp), Gabriele Comeglio (ts), Mario Rusca (p), Riccardo Vigorè (cb) und Guido Parini (dr). Diese sechs Musiker waren auch die Solisten im Konzert des Orchesters der italienischen Schweiz, das im Rahmen des Estival Jazz 1999 in Lugano zu Ehren von Duke Ellington stattfand. Meuwly hatte schon 1998 zusammen mit Ralph Towner, und dreimal in den 80er Jahren an diesem grossen Luganer Festival teilgenommen. 1993 trat er mit seinem Trio am Festival in Willisau auf. Weitere Auftritte verzeichnet er an verschiedenen Veranstaltungen und Orten, so am Ticino Jazz, am Swiss Finnish Workshop, am Tempo Jazz in Ferrara (Italien), am Mister Jazz '90 von Ravenna (Italien), und er nahm mit seiner Gruppe auch mehrmals am Blues to Bop Festival von Lugano, am Capoliena von Mailand und an vielen anderen Veranstaltungen in der ganzen Schweiz und halb Europa teil. Bei diesen Gelegenheiten hat er neben den angesehensten Musikern gespielt. Neben den schon genannten seien hier nur die wichtigsten erwähnt, nämlich Cuppini, Tommelleri, Ratti, Rigon, Faraò, Ambrosetti, Hämmerli, Scherrer, Eckinger, Zoller und dann auch Lee Konitz, Bobby Watson, Clifford Jordan, Phil Woods und viele andere. Aufnahmen und CD: Zusammen mit seinem Unterhaltungsorchester, seinen Musikergruppen, dem Pianisten Leandro Aconcha u.a.m., machte Meuwly verschiedene Aufnahmen in den Studios des Radios der italienischen Schweiz.
1988 Aufnahmen für die vom Radio RSI produzierte Schallplatte "Generazioni". Es erschienen 3 CD: 1992 "Pieces of my life", eine Produktion, bei der Meuwly einige für ihn besonders bedeutsame Melodien einspielt und erstmals auch sein Talent als Komponist beweist (finanziert wurde diese Produktion vom Kulturdepartement des Kantons Tessin); die CD "Portrait in music" (Ed. SMM, vertrieben von Altri Suoni) wurde 1994 in Lugano, zusammen mit Lee Konitz und weiteren Musikern im Rahmen einer Vorstellung der "smum" realisiert, und schliesslich die CD "Blues to bop Lugano 3.-6.9.98" (Ed. Altri Suoni), auf welcher die Highlights des Festivals festgehalten sind und worauf man auch Meuwly mit seiner Gruppe im Eröffnungstitel der CD "Mercy, mercy, mercy" hören kann. Mit grosser Hingabe bemüht sich Meuwly auch um die Organisation von Konzerten und öffentlichen Musikabenden.
