Is there a proper term to define passion for music, superb language or variety of compositions? Could "Music Salad" do the job? Or "The Matrix of emotions"? Or just simply "Contemporary Jazz"? Whatever you wish to define it, the reality with this Swiss quartet, after years of intense activity, is that it's had its high and low moments like everybody else. However this has always contributed to provide the group with new inspirations and to explore other directions and musical experiences, which is what distinguishes the sound of Jalazz.
Fabian M. Mueller on the piano is mainly self-taught and his discovery was quintessential for the Swiss jazz scene. His style is both virtuous and delicate. Stefan Widmer on sax knows how to integrate tastefully his powerful and unpredictable melodic lines with the intricate grooves of the drummer Jan Geiger and the bassist Dusan Prusàk. Geiger, Prusàk and Widmer are all alumni of the St. Gallen jazz school. Furthermore, Geiger was granted a scholarship to study at the Drummer Collective in New York, which has obviously enriched his style. Prusàk is both the youngest and the oldest member of Jalazz. He joined the quartet in 2005 but he's born in 1961, which probably counts for being the true "senior" member of the band. His experience and cold-blooded attitude are important in supporting his younger band mates, and his proneness to free improvisation constantly opens new doors to the band.

Gibt es einen sprachlichen Ausdruck, welcher die musikalische Leidenschaft, die unverwechselbare Sprache oder die Vielfalt der Kompositionen beschreiben könnte? Ist es vielleicht "Salad Music", "The Matrix of Emotions" oder doch ganz einfach "Zeitgenössischer Jazz"? Wie auch immer man es nennen möge, Tatsache ist, dass die vierköpfige Band aus der Ostschweiz nach jahrelangem Bestehen und intensiver Zusammenarbeit viele Hochs und Tiefs durchlebt hat. Diese riefen aber immer wieder neue Inspirationen für andere musikalische Richtungen und Experimente hervor, die den Sound von Jalazz in verschiedenster Weise prägten und weiterbrachten.
Fabian M. Mueller am Piano ist weitgehend Autodidakt und in der Schweizer Jazzszene die Entdeckung schlechthin. Sein Spiel ist virtuos und gleichzeitig feinfühlig. Stefan Widmer am Saxofon integriert seine kraftvollen, verspielten Linien genussvoll in die von Jan Geiger am Schlagzeug und Dusan Prusak am Kontrabass geflochtenen Grooves. Ebenso wie Geiger und Prusak ist auch Widmer ein Abkömmling der St. Galler Jazzschule. Zudem konnte sich Jan Geiger dank einem Stipendium am Drummers Collective in New York weiterbilden, was sein Schlagzeugspiel unheimlich bereichert hat. Prusak ist das jüngste und gleichzeitig das älteste Mitglied von Jalazz. Er stiess erst im Dezember 2005 zum Quartett, ist jedoch mit Jahrgang 1961 der Senior der Band. Seine Erfahrung und Abgebrühtheit ergänzt sich wundervoll mit dem Elan seiner jüngeren Mitmusiker, und seine Affinität zur freien Improvisation öffnet der Band immer wieder neue Tore.

Mueller traktierte mit beiden Händen die Seiten seines Flügels, mit druckvoller Intensität bearbeitete Bassist Dusan Prusak die Saiten seines Instruments mit dem Bogen, Drummer Jan Geiger wob auf seinem Schlagzeug ein dichtes Geflecht an Rolls, Schlägen und Beats und darüber zündete Altsaxofonist Stefan Widmer ein Feuerwerk an wilden Trillern, Glissandi und Tonkaskaden im Flageolettbereich.
Neben den klugen Arrangements und dem hochstehenden Können der vier Musiker vermochte Jalazz vor allem durch den enormen Druck zu überzeugen, mit dem das Gespielte vorgetragen wurde. Ein formidables Quartett."

Esiste un termine appropriato per descrivere insieme la passione musicale, il linguaggio inconfondibile o la varietà delle composizioni? Potrebbe forse essere: "Un'insalata musicale"? "La matrice delle emozioni?" oppure molto più semplicemente "Jazz contemporaneo"? Come lo si vuol definire poco importa, la realtà è che il quartetto della Svizzera orientale, dopo lunghi anni d'esistenza e d'intensiva collaborazione, ha vissuto alti e bassi. Questo ha comunque sempre contribuito a dar vita a nuove ispirazioni per sondare altre direzioni ed esperienze musicali, ciò che ha contrassegnato e sviluppato in modo diverso il sound di Jalazz.
Fabian M. Mueller al pianoforte è soprattutto un'autodidatta e nel panorama jazzistico elvetico la scoperta per antonomasia. Il suo stile è virtuoso e contemporaneamente delicato. Stefan Widmer al saxofono sa integrare con tanto gusto le sue linee melodiche possenti e estrose con i "grooves" intrecciati del batterista Jan Geiger e del bassista Dusan Prusak. Come Geiger e Prusak, anche Widmer è un discepolo della scuola jazz di San Gallo. Inoltre grazie ad una borsa di studio Jan Geiger ha potuto usufruire di una formazione supplementare presso il "Drummer Collective" di New York, ciò che ha contribuito enormemente all'arricchimento del suo stile esecutivo. Prusak è il collega più giovane e contemporaneamente più vecchio della formazione Jalazz. Entrò nel quartetto nel dicembre del 2005, ma essendo del 1961 è il senior del gruppo musicale. La sua esperienza e impassibilità si completa in modo esemplare con lo slancio dei suoi più giovani colleghi,e la sua affinità per l'improvvisazione libera dischiude alla formazione sempre nuove porte.

Mueller tormenta a 2 mani le corde del suo pianoforte a coda, con impetuosa intensità il bassista Dusan Prusak maltratta le corde del suo strumento con l'archetto, il batterista Jan Geiger si agita sulla sua batteria con un intreccio di arrotolamenti, di colpi e "beats" e al di sopra di tutti il saxofonista alto Stefan Widmer accende alle polveri con trilli,glissandi e cascate tonali scatenate in ambito di flagioletto.
Soprattutto grazie ad intelligenti arrangiamenti e alla bravura dei quattro musicisti, Jalazz è stato capace di persuadere l'uditorio anche attraverso l'enorme impulso con cui si è prodotto sulla scena. Un quartetto formidabile."
